Single-molecule GPCR signaling
| |
A PhD fellowship is vacant as of October 1st, 2010 at the Bio-Imaging Center/Rudolf Virchow Center, University of Würzburg. The title of the project is: “Direct visualization of GPCR signaling by single-molecule microscopy”.
G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) form the largest family of cell surface receptors and are major targets of pharmacological intervention. In order to further investigate the intimate nature of these receptors, we are currently developing new methods to directly visualize a single GPCR and the signals produced by its activation.
The successful applicant will be involved in further developing these methods and will utilize them to address fundamental and still unsolved questions in GPCR signaling. This project will require the use of advanced microscopy techniques, such as total internal fluorescence reflection (TIRF) and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) microscopy, as well as sophisticated mathematical analyses. Applicants should preferably have a background in biophysics, biochemistry/cell biology or bioinformatics. Good computer knowledge is required. Previous programming experience is welcome but not mandatory. Applications are invited from all nationalities, with a Master's degree (or Diploma) in a relevant area. The candidate is supposed to participate in the Graduate School of Life Sciences of the University of Würzburg (http://www.graduateschools.uni-wuerzburg.de/life_sciences/).
