Study of systematic effects in a experiment to measure the electric dipole moment of the neutron
| |
A new generation experiment to measure the limit for the electric dipole moment of the neutron (nEDM) on the 10^-28 e cm level requires magnetic shielding on an unprecedented level. Due to its magnetic moment, the neutron is affected by earth magnetic field as well as by other ambient magnetic field fluctuations and gradients.
In a first step EDM measurements will be performed on an existing improved apparatus (OILL: Old ILL Sussex apparatus) at the new strong UCN source at the Paul Scherrer Institute (Switzerland).
As we are part of an internal collaboration working on this experiment we plan to set up a co-analysis group, with a detailed plan of experimental and theoretical strategies to study the systematic effects on the measurement of the electric dipole moment of the neutron.
We are currently seeking a physicist filling a PhD position for this experiment. This position will be paid according to German TVL-E13/2 (PhD) scheme for an initial duration of 3 years. It is opened in the framework of a scientific priority program financed by the DFG (German science foundation).
